Qualifications & Experience
A little bit about us, between 1978 and 1989 we owned and operated WF & TM Gallagher Registered Builders, building display homes and countless high quality homes for our clients. In 1989 the housing industry had a significant downturn in Victoria which presented an opportunity to assess our future in the industry.
In the late 70’s and early 80’s I had been involved in some technology trials within the building industry and recognised the emerging trend that would eventually see virtually every business either directly or indirectly being reliant on computer technology to operate their business.
I initially become involved with computerised business management software systems in 1989 while in a short term of employment with an insurance and investment company; by 1993 I had become an Accredited Trainer with Reckon who were at the time trading as Quicken, I began working with local business’s helping them to establish their computerised management systems and networking environments.
In recent years our focus has been on assisting clients with installation, configuration and support of their accounting software and/or POS (Point of Sale) software installations and associated hardware and network configuration.
In the last couple of years I received recognition of 10 years of service as an Accredited Trainer with Reckon (I guess their records didn’t go back to the early nineties).
Business derives its existence from the local community; we at La Trobe Academy of Business lead with our actions when it comes to giving back to community. We have our ear to the ground looking for opportunities where we can contribute to our local community. We can we do this by volunteering our professional services to assist community groups on an on-going basis.
We have owned and operated businesses for over thirty five years, for the majority of that time, have had opportunity to have involvement in many different community groups.
Currently I am actively involved in three committees of management:-
– Active volunteer member with the CFA – current position Secretary/Treasurer
– Member of the committee of management with our local flying school – current position Treasurer
– Member of our local community hall committee – current position Secretary
– I walk to maintain a reasonable level of physical fitness
– I enjoy reading to keep an active mind and mental fitness
– In 2003 I gained my private pilot’s license and fly as often as I can
– I like to engage with new technology at every opportunity
– I have a fourth form (year 10) formal education from Morwell Technical School (completed 1970)
– I trained as a carpenter and joiner apprentice for my first job
Throughout my years of business I have staunchly resisted doing short courses for the sake of having ‘bits of paper’ (certificates) hanging on my office wall. I preferred having to rely on my hard gained experience to provide a relevant service to my clients. However in recent years as a result of the introduction of federal government laws I have been compelled to gain additional formal qualifications.
I have recently completed:-
– Certificate IV in Financial Services (Bookkeeping)
– Certificate IV in Training and Assessment
Although I acknowledge the current value of these certificates, the reason for undertaking the courses is that under current law Trainers/Bookkeepers are unable to provide fee for service training/bookwork without mandatory qualifications (we managed ok without them for the first 30 years). The process of obtaining these qualifications has improved the service we provide.
